The Chicago public school system has spent nearly $6.1 millionin overtime wages for its maintenance staff since January - a nearly16 percent increase over the same period last year, a ChicagoSun-Times study shows.
Because of a pledge in April to freeze overtime pay during thesystem's worst financial crisis in a decade, the costs dropped towardthe end of the school year - but still amounted to more than $600,000a month.
The costs dipped to about $229,000 for the month represented bythe last two pay periods - when school was not in session - a 26percent increase over the same time last year, Chicago Board ofEducation records show.
